4/11/24 Port of Oakland Meeting

The Port of Oakland Board of Commissioners will be voting on the controversial name change of the “Oakland International Airport” to “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport” at their meeting April 11th, starting at 3:30pm at 530 Water Street, Oakland.

After a March 29 article in the SF Chronicle said the rebranding to “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport” is intended to increase passenger traffic, the Stop Oak Coalition was quick to respond.  Our members sent in letters to the editor in both the SF Chronicle and Mercury News that pointed out the contradiction between the Port’s claim that passenger demand justifies its drastic expansion plan and the reality of decreased passenger traffic after the Covid epidemic. They also pointed out the need to address the negative health and environmental impacts OAK currently has, especially on people in East Oakland. See Coalition member letters:  SF Chronicle Lin Griffith  Mercury News Jeffrey Beeman and David Foecke, Lin Griffith and Kay Guinane

Coalition member David Foecke was quoted in April 8th Oaklandside article, “The proposal to rename the Oakland airport as the San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport is a blatant attempt to steal passengers away from SFO, because the Port of Oakland staff now realize that their supposed ‘market-based’ projections of increased passenger traffic at OAK—that they are using to justify their plans to add a new terminal and 16 more gates—are pure fantasy.”

Coalition members will attend the April 11 meeting and speak out against efforts to increase passenger traffic without addressing these health and environmental concerns.  PLEASE JOIN US!
